Olivia Mitchell TD

Olivia was educated at Trinity College Dublin where she qualified with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics & Politics and a Higher Diploma in Education. Before entering politics she taught Economics in a girls' secondary school in the constituency. She served on Dublin /Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council from 1985-2003 and was Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council from 1995 to 1996.

She was a member of the Regional Authority, the Eastern Health Board, Dublin Healthy Cities Project and was Dublin Representative on the World Health Organisation multi-city action plan. She was also a member of the Dublin Transportation Office Advisory Committee.

First elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1997 general election, Olivia was returned to the 29th Dáil at the 2002 general election with 5,568 first preferences. She increased this vote significantly at the 2007 general election to the 30th Dáil, polling 9,037 first preferences and easily retaining her seat. In 2001 she received her first Front Bench position as Spokesperson on Housing & Local Government. She then served as Opposition Spokesperson on Health & Children (2002 – 2004) and Transport (2004 – 2007). Most recently, Olivia was Fine Gael Spokesperson on Arts, Sport and Tourism, September 2007-July 2010.
